Caring for Your Fall Mums

Mums are one of the most popular plants for fall displays in Connecticut, but they still need regular care to stay colorful throughout the season.

Water regularly. Check the soil frequently, especially during warm or dry fall weather. Container-grown mums can dry out surprisingly quickly. Water thoroughly around the base of the plant rather than simply wetting the flowers.

Don't let them completely dry out. Once a mum becomes severely wilted, it can be difficult for the plant to fully recover. Planters and smaller pots may need more frequent attention than mums planted directly in garden beds.

Remove spent flowers. Pinching or cutting off flowers that have turned brown helps keep the display looking clean and attractive.

Keep an eye on the weather. Mums handle cool fall temperatures well, but freezing conditions can damage flowers and shorten the life of your display.

Keeping Your Pumpkins Looking Good

A good pumpkin can last for weeks outdoors when properly cared for.

Try to place pumpkins on a clean, relatively dry surface rather than somewhere that remains constantly wet. Excess moisture underneath the pumpkin can encourage it to soften and rot.

Check your display periodically for damaged or soft pumpkins. Removing a deteriorating pumpkin early can help keep the rest of the display looking fresh.

Whole, uncarved pumpkins will generally last much longer outdoors than carved pumpkins, which is why we typically prefer whole pumpkins for decorative landscape displays.

How Do You Keep Animals Away From Fall Displays?

Squirrels and other wildlife can sometimes turn a beautiful pumpkin display into their own fall buffet.

One of the simplest ways to discourage animals is to keep the area around the display clean. Fallen seeds, food, trash, and other attractants can encourage animals to spend more time near your entrance.

It can also help to move or rotate pumpkins occasionally and regularly inspect them for bite marks or damage. Once a pumpkin has been opened or damaged, its scent can make it more attractive to wildlife.

For properties that regularly have problems with squirrels or other animals, consider using a commercial animal repellent labeled as safe for use around ornamental plants and outdoor displays. Always follow the product's label directions, especially around pets, children, and edible plants.

Fall Planter Boxes

Your summer planters don't have to sit empty once temperatures begin dropping.

We can transform existing pots and planter boxes into seasonal fall arrangements using combinations of mums, ornamental cabbage, pumpkins, and other seasonal materials.

Fall planters are an easy way to add color around front doors, patios, walkways, and entrances without redesigning the surrounding landscape.
